Crawl Space Encapsulation: Mold

Crawl spaces are a major source of mold in homes, which contributes to poor indoor air quality and has been linked to asthma, allergies, and other health problems. Moisture, odors, mold spores, and pests can enter your home if it is not properly encapsulated.

Is mold growing in your crawl space?

Mold should not be present in your crawl space if it has been properly encapsulated. As previously stated, encapsulation aids in the prevention of moisture accumulation. As a result, mold should not be able to grow.

Is encapsulation effective at preventing mold?

Crawl space encapsulation is the most effective method of preventing mold growth in your home as a result of a damp crawl space. Crawl spaces are very different from basements in many ways. These structures are typically 2 to 5 feet tall, have concrete walls, are not accessible from the inside of the house, and have dirt floors in most cases.

Is it necessary to be concerned about mold in the crawl space?

It is, in fact, true. The most dangerous type of mold is black mold, though other types of mold, which are more benign, can also cause health problems or exacerbate existing ones. When mold takes over the crawl space, it releases toxic microscopic spores that can float into the living space.

Is it possible to encase black mold?

First, as much mold as possible is removed from the surface, and the surface is cleaned with a fungicide  40-80 to ensure that the mold does not return. After that, an encapsulating product is painted over the surface to seal in any mold that may still be present.

How long it takes for mold to grow in a moist crawl space?

Mold growths, also known as mold colonies, can begin to grow on a damp surface within 24 to 48 hours of contact. They reproduce by dispersing spores, which are microscopic, lightweight “seeds” that travel through the air. Molds consume organic matter, eventually destroying the organic material on which they grow, and then spread to consume adjacent organic material as well.
